The Changes
-----------
Woh, that's a big heading! Where do I start? Okay, let's start at the
beginning with the options window. This is largely unchanged, except that a
lot of the options are ghosted out. This includes the maximum turns and
infinite game options, and the new galaxy size settings.
In the game proper, there is one totally new window, and nearly all the
others are changed. The galaxy window is now graphical, which means that
unless your galaxy is 11 by 7 (which it can't be!) you can't see all of it.
Also, when you are being asked whether the galaxy is suitable, you can't
scroll it either. For this reason I added an extra window to show you a
scaled down view of the whole galaxy. This window is titled Zoom (You can
only see the Z under WB1.3!). Clicking on this window will move the galaxy
display around, as do the arrows and scrollbars by the galaxy window. You
will notice that you can now size and move nearly all the windows, and that
you can close the planetlist, fleetlist and zoom window completely (use the
Options menu to bring them back).
The control window looks totally different, because it uses a completely
new system. The most important thing about this is that it is based on a
`current' object. You will see, in about the middle of the window, a box
below which is the word Current. This box contains the current object
(planet, fleet or space). The numbers in the two smaller boxes next to it
represent the X and Y coordinates of the object. Clicking on anything in the
galaxy, planetlist or fleetlist makes that object the current object.
Clicking on it again will move the galaxy and the planetlist or fleetlist to
display it. It will also allow you, if the planet is yours, to change it's
name. Yes, planets and fleets now have four letter names instead of just
letters. Anyway, once you have a current object you can make it the source
or destination by clicking on the boxes labelled `Source' and `Dest'. The #
Ships slider works as before, except that you can no longer type the number.
When you are ready, click `SendShps' to send the fleet off. `EndTurn' works
as before. The rest of the control window is taken up with the contents of
the old `Status' window.
The menu options are fairly self-explanatory, though you will notice that
Load and Save Game are ghosted out (you'll have to register!). Set Name lets
you change a player's name while playing.
The Registered Version
----------------------
This is currently just the same as the demo except the various functions
which are disabled in the demo are fully available, and you can have longer
games, bigger galaxies and load and save your games all you like. However,
v1.01 should't be too far off, so see below for what you might get.
The Future
----------
The main feature on the cards for v1.01 is the adding of keyboard
shortcuts for all major features, and I may also possibly add the ability to
set the maximum galaxy size and number of planets according to taste and
memory limitations. v1.02 is likely to be an even bigger update, with such
things as different types of ships, more graphics, factory ships, starbases,
and more. After that I'm not quite sure, but we'll see what developes from
the different types of ships. Another possibility is having more than two
players, and possibly a computer player (if anybody knows how to add one of
these, PLEASE write- if your suggestions are helpful you can register for
free!). Also it has been suggested that there might be a Star Trek special
edition version- but you'll have to wait and see as far as that is
concerned.
